Ultra Wide Band (UWB) is a very promising technology for the broadband transmission of data using spectrum efficient radio techniques. Initiatives such as the WiMedia Alliance developed concepts to use UWB as a standard radio platform allowing transport of upper level protocols such as the wireless USB (WUSB). UWB is then a base technology for ubiquitous mobile networks.
EU R&D projects for UWB technology have been already set up and running (e.g., PULSERS). These projects have produced relevant contributions to UWB deployment at a worldwide level but very few contributions to standardization. The challenge is now to give UWB the tools to experiment and demonstrate its interoperability with other standards while ensuring its compliance with regulations and emerging standards.
With reference to the testing aspects, the needs of the different stakeholders (industry, research, regulators) will be analyzed and the related testing methodologies and procedures designed and validated. The WALTER project will leverage on the existing test facilities in order to establish a pan-European distributed test laboratory in support to industries and researchers.
In the short term, the WALTER project will be the cornerstone to the European industry competitiveness in wide band radio technology while putting Europe ahead in the definition and development of the future networks and services.

Objectives:
 | To help in a quick deployment of UWB standards and ensure interoperability between UWB devices, increasing user, consumer and government confidence in UWB technology through the establishment of a common and networked reference test bed and a set of suitable testing procedures

| To support ETSI for Harmonized standards:
|
o To validate and complete the test procedures for the first ETSI harmonized standard on UWB communication devices.
o To support ETSI for second ETSI harmonized standard including mitigation techniques and coexistence mechanisms with victim services.
