Analysis of successful regional innovation management approaches adopted by internationally renowned good practice regions and formulation of recommendations for the Large Scale Research Centre Karlsruhe (FZK)

This study – commissioned by the Large Scale Research Centre Karlsruhe (FZK) – aimed at defining how far the Karlsruhe Region is from reaching the standard of a “good practice” region. In the scope of this work, the regions identified as “good practice” regions – against which Karlsruhe has been benchmarked – are: Cambridge, Göteborg, Grenoble, Hamburg, Helsinki, Leiden, Leuven, München, North Carolina, Oxford und Zürich.
Despite the presence of a critical mass of technical universities and research institutes in the area of Karlsruhe, the region cannot be considered a Knowledge Regions. Nonetheless, it would probably fulfil all requirements for positioning as “technology region”, as its high research standards and the commercialisation possibilities of its research results are not inferior to those available in some of the benchmark regions.
This study shows how Karlsruhe disposes of a high success potential, but does not present some of the most important success factors. Compared to the Good practice regions, Karlsruhe has still some work to do to reach a “regional innovation system” and its innovation development strategy needs improving.
